There is a great deal of research in small animal models investigating the musculoskeletal response to increased mechanical loading, as well as total unloading (e.g. tail suspension). However, there has been little investigation into the physiological effects of partial weight bearing (PWB) environments, which may serve as models for clinically relevant conditions such as space flight, bed rest, immobilization, stroke, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, spinal cord injury, or reductions in physical activity.

Tibial stress injuries. An aetiological review for the purposes of guiding management.

In the last 30 years, few advances have been made in the management of tibial stress injuries such as tibial stress fracture and medial tibial stress syndrome (MTSS). Tibial overuse injuries are a recognised complication of the chronic, intensive, weight-bearing training commonly practised by athletic and military populations. Generally, the most effective treatment is considered to be rest, of...

Weight-bearing-induced displacement and migration over time of fracture fragments following split depression fractures of the lateral tibial plateau: a case series with radiostereometric analysis.

We investigated the stability of seven Schatzker type II fractures of the lateral tibial plateau treated by subchondral screws and a buttress plate followed by immediate partial weight-bearing. In order to assess the stability of the fracture, weight-bearing inducible displacements of the fracture fragments and their migration over a one-year period were measured by differentially loaded radios...

Immediate weight-bearing after osteosynthesis of proximal tibial fractures may be allowed.

INTRODUCTION Immediate weight-bearing following osteosynthesis of proximal tibial fractures is traditionally not allowed due to fear of articular fracture collapse. Anatomically shaped locking plates with sub-articular screws could improve stability and allow greater loading forces. The purpose of this study was to investigate if immediate weight-bearing can be allowed following locking plate o...

The effect of implant position on bone strain following lateral unicompartmental knee arthroplasty

OBJECTIVES Unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA) is a demanding procedure, with tibial component subsidence or pain from high tibial strain being potential causes of revision. The optimal position in terms of load transfer has not been documented for lateral UKA. Our aim was to determine the effect of tibial component position on proximal tibial strain. METHODS A total of 16 composite tibi...

Partial weight suspension: a novel murine model for investigating adaptation to reduced musculoskeletal loading.

We developed a new model of hypodynamic loading to support mice in chronic conditions of partial weight bearing, enabling simulations of reduced gravity environments and related clinical conditions. The novel hardware allows for reduced loading between 10 and 80% of normal body weight on all four limbs and enables characteristic quadrupedal locomotion. Ten-week-old female BALB/cByJ mice were su...
